1- High mercury fish – Avoiding high-mercury fish during pregnancy is important because mercury can be harmful to both the mother and the developing baby. High mercury fish name tuna, Shark, Swordfish, King mackerel, Tilefish, Marlin, Orange roughly, and Bigeye tuna.

2 – Raw or undercooked eggs – Eating raw or undercooked eggs should be avoided during pregnancy as there is a risk of salmonella infection, which can cause food poisoning. Salmonella can lead to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever, and it can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women. Infection during pregnancy can lead to dehydration, premature labor or harm to the baby. Since raw eggs are often used in recipes such as homemade mayonnaise, dressings or certain desserts, it is important to make sure the eggs are thoroughly cooked. Excessive sugar intake increases the risk of complications like high blood pressure, poor energy levels and high birth weight, affecting the health of both mother and baby.

5 – Undercooked raw and processed meat – Undercooked, raw and processed meats should be avoided during pregnancy as they pose a risk of foodborne illnesses like Salmonella, Listeria, Toxoplasmosis and E. coli, which can harm both mother and baby. These infections may cause miscarriage, premature birth, or developmental problems. Processed meats like deli meats and hot dogs may also contain harmful chemicals like nitrates and excess sodium, which can have negative effects on pregnancy health.

6 – Caffeine – Caffeine should be avoided during pregnancy as it can increase the risk of miscarriage, low birth weight, premature birth, and affect fetal development due to its stimulant and diuretic effects.

7 – Unpasteurized dairy products – Unpasteurized dairy products should be avoided during pregnancy because they may contain harmful bacteria like Listeria, Salmonella, or E. coli. These bacteria can cause foodborne illnesses that pose significant risks to both the mother and baby. Listeria infection, for instance, can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, or serious health issues for the newborn, such as infection or developmental problems. Pasteurization eliminates these harmful bacteria by heating the product, making it safer for pregnant women. Therefore, consuming only pasteurized dairy helps protect both maternal and fetal health during pregnancy.

8 – Canned foods – Canned foods should be avoided during pregnancy because of the possible presence of BPA (Bisphenol A) in the lining of the cans, which can harm fetal development. Additionally, some packaged foods are high in sodium, which can contribute to pregnancy complications.
